Claudio Monteverdi was an Italian composer, gambist, and singer. He was born May 15, 1567 in a town called Cremona which is in Northern Italy. His father was an Italian doctor, apothecary, and surgeon. Monteverdi was the oldest of five children. Claudio also wrote one of the earliest operas titled, L’Orfeo, which is still performed today. He became very famous in his lifetime. He married a court singer named Claudia Cattaneo, who later died in September of 1607. Together they had three children; two boys and a girl who had died shortly after birth.
