Porcelain Veneers: are They for Me?
Most of us by now have heard something about cosmetic dentistry, and know someone who has had a procedure done. The supermarkets and drug stores offer whole rows of tooth whitening products, which many people have tried, with varying results. Perhaps you have tried something, or asked your local dentist what he can offer.
What is not so widely known is that only a dentist specifically trained in cosmetic dentistry can reliably and effectively enhance your smile. Some general dentists offer a few cosmetic procedures on the side. But the place to get full cosmetic dentistry training is in a post-graduate dental school, and the premier such school is the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI).
What do Porcelain Veneers Accomplish?
They give you a new front surface for the front teeth. They are very thin covers which your cosmetic dentist attaches permanently to the teeth visible in your smile, to reshape, re-color, and re-align its appearance.
In one treatment they can take care of a cluster of relatively minor dental problems.
• Small gaps between front teeth
• Staining that will not respond to a tooth whitening treatment
• Slight crookedness or misalignment
• Small chips or shallow cracks
Back teeth with problems will usually need a porcelain onlay, inlay or porcelain crown. Those teeth are for chewing and need strong top surfaces. But the front teeth are for biting, and principally need good front surfaces if you want an enhanced smile. To have porcelain veneers done, the teeth need to be healthy, and no qualified cosmetic dentist will proceed with any cosmetic work before your dental health is firmly established.
What is Porcelain?
It’s a dental ceramic which comes in many shades of white, so your cosmetic dentist can choose the shade most closely matching your natural tooth enamel. As a word to the wise: get your teeth whitenend first, if that is on your Dental To Do list. Then the porcelain can be chosen to match your new shade of white.
Porcelain is stain-resistant and will not respond to tooth-whitening. By itself it’s brittle, but after it’s bonded to the teeth, it’s hard and durable. It has a semi-translucency like tooth enamel – they both absorb and reflect light in similar ways. That gives porcelain the same pearly shine that natural teeth have when they’re clean.
The Porcelain Veneers Procedure
Two visits are needed, after it is established that you are ready to have this done. If you are a person who feels anxiety about visiting a dentist, you will be welcome to have an oral sedative to soothe your nervousness and make you feel calm and confident.
1. Your cosmetic dentist prepares the teeth by removing a very thin amount of enamel to make space for the veneers. This requires no anesthetic, as the tooth’s nerve is not near the surface.
The dentist then takes an impression of the teeth and sends it along with other information to a dental lab. The lab will custom-make your veneers from a shade of porcelain your dentist chooses to match your other teeth. This may take a couple of weeks or more, depending on how busy the lab is.
In the meantime, most people do not need any temporary veneers, although if you would like some, your dentist will oblige.
2. Any temporary veneers are removed and the permanent veneers temporarily affixed. They may need slight adjusting or tiny pieces shaved off for best effect. When you and your dentist are satisfied, they will be permanently bonded to the teeth. This makes them a part of the teeth, and they will not loosen or fall off unless there is some unusual trauma to them.
How Should I Care for my Veneers?
They require no special care. Give them the same daily brushing and flossing you give your natural teeth, and go for regular dental check-ups and professional cleaning. It would be sensible to avoid using your front teeth to remove bottle caps, or similar activities – which you should avoid anyway, if you want to preserve your teeth.
