can a prosthetic be used on a dog’s forelimb ? ?

I have a 13 years old yellow lab diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma on the wrist of his right forelimb. The vet is suggesting a full limb amputation and when I asked him about doing the amputation 2 inch above the cancer lump such that a prosthetic is used later on, he said that prosthetics are not used for dogs at all. So, the question I have is this: if the amputation is incurred one inch or two inches aboce the forelimb wrist … what prevents us from using a socket prosthetic like that used for human .. the same working principle. Please help on the answer if you have some input.

They do use prosthetics, but they are not like the human ones. You cannot really teach the dog to take care of the prosthetic, and they are less concerned with appearing ‘normal’ than humans are. Most likely he would end up with a wheeled limb, which wouldn’t require the other joints. If the prosthetic comes off a partial limb can be an encumberance that a dog might not tolerate well, while a human understands. With 3 legs he may not really need or want a prosthetic; but if you get one, it may not even work as well with a partial limb.

I would go to another vet for multiple opinions about your specific dog and the options available, but keep in mind it may not be as you expect.
